Congregations give generously to Presbyterians Sharing in 2009
When the 2009 books closed congregations and individuals across Canada had donated $8,513,867.21 to Presbyterians Sharing! These gifts helped share the good news of the gospel in word and action by:
- starting new churches in Canada and revitalizing established ones
sending mission staff and volunteers around the world to work with our mission partners - supporting students at our theological colleges and new ministers in their first churches
- equipping churches in Christian education, evangelism, stewardship and mission
- supporting native, inner-city and refugee ministries in Canada
- and much much more!
For stories of how gifts to Presbyterians Sharing are changing people’s lives check out the videos and resources at www.presbyterian.ca/sharing.
The majority of contributions to Presbyterians Sharing, $8,472,456, come from congregations. This year these gifts were only 1.3% less than the $8,585,554 given in 2008, representing a significant effort from congregations across Canada, at a time of economic downturn and increasing demands on the resources of congregations. (35% of congregations increased their giving from 2008 and 29% were able to give at the same level as 2008. Only 36% decreased their giving from 2008.)
In addition, congregations and individuals gave $2,669,681 to Presbyterian World Service & Development, the relief and development agency of The Presbyterian Church in Canada and over $230,000 to projects of International and Canada Ministries – all over and above work supported by Presbyterians Sharing. More than $1.1 million was also given to support the ministry of The Presbyterian Church in Canada through bequests, annuities and gifts of stock.
It is amazing to see the strong commitment from congregations across Canada to engage in mission and ministry beyond the boundaries of their local communities.
