General Assembly 2010
136th General Assembly
June 6-11, 2010, in Sydney, Cape Breton
"Sailing into the Future" is the theme of the Local Arrangements Committee as they prepare to welcome the commissioners and participants of the 136th General Assembly to Sydney, Nova Scotia.
A community rich in tradition invites us to look forward to new possibilities. The “Cape Breton” tartan vests worn by the volunteers; the “Kitchen Party” and lobster dinner; through to the special Wednesday events will all be the signs of the great friendship and hospitality that participants will experience. We will celebrate our faith and experience worship in a Cape Breton fashion as we worship in local congregations and daily services, and in the opening worship and celebration of Communion on Sunday evening.

General Information
One Covenant of Grace
Moderator of 136th General Assembly
The Rev. Stephen Kendall, Principal Clerk of General Assembly, on behalf of the Committee to Advise the Moderator, announced on 1 April 2010 that the name of The Rev. Dr. Herb Gale, Associate Secretary, Planned Giving, The Presbyterian Church in Canada, will be placed as the sole nominee to be Moderator of the 136th General Assembly this June in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Herbert Gale (A.B., M.Th., D.Min.)
Herb Gale, born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, was an active member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, he served his home congregation as youth director before entering Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. After receiving his D.Min. from Union Seminary, Herb was called to Shelby Presbyterian Church in North Carolina as associate minister. From Shelby, Herb attended the Toronto School of Theology where he received a M.Th. in the area of spirituality.
In 1984, Herb was called to St. James Church in Stouffville, Ontario. While there, Herb met his wife, Shirley, who is also a Presbyterian minister. From Stouffville, the Gales were called, in 1993, to serve as co-pastors of Westminster-St. Paul’s Church in Guelph, Ontario, where they still reside. In June 2004, Herb accepted the position of Associate Secretary for Planned Giving for The Presbyterian Church in Canada. In this work, he travels across Canada helping congregations develop vital planned giving ministries that are integrated into their theology of stewardship and their vision of ministry.
Herb has previously served on the Worship Advisory Committee when it produced The Book of Common Worship in 1991 and the Stewardship Advisory Committee when the Stewards by Design Conferences were initiated. He is a frequent retreat leader and conference speaker. He has been the worship leader for three Stewards by Design Conferences, the worship co-ordinator for Canada Youth 2003, and the worship leader and chaplain for three national Clerks’ Consultations. Having deep passion for stewardship and spiritual growth and development, he has a breadth of knowledge in congregational ministry having served congregations from 75 to 3,000 members, both urban and rural, over the past 25 years; and he is well aware of the possibilities and challenges of congregational life. A pastor at heart and a Canadian Presbyterian by conviction, Herb is convinced that an intentional focus on planned giving can help provide an additional source of funding for the church at every level to realize its dreams and to expand its ministry for generations to come.
