Poverty in Canada Factsheet

October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Around the world, people will affirm their commitment to ending poverty. The Week to End Poverty is October 12-19, 2008. This resource provides information on poverty in Canada and can be used with the KAIROS Week to End Poverty resource.

Congregations can:

  • Remember October 17 in prayers.
  • Learn about poverty in your community. Find opportunities to follow the biblical mandate to “love your neighbour as yourself” (Matt. 22:39).
  • Write to your provincial government. If it has not already done so, ask for a plan to reduce poverty with measurable targets and timelines.
  • Meet with your elected official at the provincial or federal level. For assistance in preparing to meet with your elected official, please contact Justice Ministries.
