Tuesday, 10 January 2012

Murray Garvin

International Ministries has just learned of the sad news that Rev. Murray Garvin, an English teacher at The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan’s Yu Shan Theological College and Seminary, passed away suddenly in his sleep yesterday in Taiwan. Rev. Murray Garvin had served in Taiwan for 21 years as a Presbyterian Church in Canada missionary.

Murray had served for many years as a missionary with his wife Mary Helen, raising their five children in Taiwan. Murray returned to Canada, was minister of Weston Presbyterian Church and then was appointed Secretary for Mission Education under the old Board of World Mission. Murray then went to the Kootenays where he served until his retirement and then stayed on for a few years after as Stated Supply. He returned to Taiwan several years ago as a volunteer missionary, teaching at YuShan theological seminary in Hualien – a seminary for aboriginal students. Murray died in the place that he loved.

A memorial service will be held at Yu Shan on Thursday and at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Barrie Ontario towards the end of January. Details will be announced when they are made available.

UPDATE:
A service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 47 Owen Street, Barrie Ontario on Sunday, January 22, 2012. Visitation will be at 2:00 pm and the memorial service at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers donations made be made to The Presbyterian Church in Canada and marked as “Garvin Aboriginal Taiwanese Scholarship Fund”.
