Despite the advancement of floodwaters into some southern districts of Pakistan, water has receded from a few areas, giving families a chance to assess damages to their homes and property. So far, the floods have destroyed an estimated 3.5 million houses, leaving approximately 4.6 million people homeless, according to the United Nations.
The rebuilding process is slow, even for skilled workers, as prices for housing materials more than doubled after the floods. Many shepherds, farmers and fishermen need to re-establish their livelihoods before they can afford to reconstruct their homes.
Although Nawaz, an 18-year-old day labourer, possesses the necessary skills to rebuild his home, the time he spends on his home keeps him from other income-generating work. “Money is running out,” he says grimly.
PWS&D Responds
Presbyterian World Service & Development is supporting over 150,000 of the most vulnerable people in Pakistan with food, shelter, emergency supplies and health care. Twenty water tanks have already been installed, providing safe and clean drinking water to displaced people. Construction Trade Training Centres will empower community members to reconstruct their homes and cash-for-work initiatives will help to re-establish agricultural livelihoods.
