Sacred Art event image

TORONTO, ON — Building on the success of last year’s Come Sea & Believe...The Dead Sea Scrolls, Knox College is proud to present its second fall event, Sacred Art...and Divine Inspiration, in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).

The daylong event will be held on Saturday, October 16th at the College featuring lectures from Father Dan Donovan, Professor Emeritus of Theology at St. Michael’s College and a well known figure on the Canadian contemporary art scene, and Gillian McIntyre, the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Adult Program Co-ordinator.

The event will help answer several questions that are often associated with the spiritual experience of art appreciation; how did the concept of sacred art evolve, how can we recognize what may be spiritual in art and what does it mean to us and our spirituality as Christians today.

Father Donovan, providing his prospective as a theologian and drawing on pieces from his private collection, will illustrate the ways in which art can evoke deeper experiences for those who choose to contemplate it while Ms. McIntyre will show how art galleries themselves contribute to the notion of how art can touch our spiritual
selves including the Gehry redesign of the AGO.

Attendees will have the opportunity to embark on a self-guided gallery tour in the afternoon as well as an option to attend a lunch with at the College where Faculty member The Rev. Dr. Pamela McCarroll will briefly speak on the Reformation and art.

Tickets for the event range from $65 to $150, including admission to the AGO, and can be purchased through the College’s Development office at 416.978.6228. For more information, visit www.utoronto.ca/knox.
