Over 150,000 people have been displaced due to damages from Tropical Storm Agatha. Photo: ACT
On 29 May 2010, Tropical Storm Agatha dumped more than 1 metre of rainfall in parts of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, claiming over 150 lives and causing widespread flooding, landslides and a giant sinkhole to open in Guatemala City. Over 150,000 people in Guatemala were evacuated, and nearly 30,000 are in temporary shelters. Damaged roads and bridges are slowing the delivery of relief items to the worst-hit areas.
PWS&D is responding through the ACT Alliance to help those most affected by providing food and emergency supplies, setting up temporary shelters, clearing debris and rebuilding livelihoods.
