Massive Earthquake Hits Chile: PWS&D Accepting Donations
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake—one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded—hit Chile on February 27, 2010, followed by at least six strong aftershocks over 6.0 magnitude.
Concepcion, one of Chile’s largest cities, was the worst hit. The quake is feared to have claimed more than 700 lives, destroyed 1.5 million homes, and damaged highways, bridges, hospitals and infrastructure for electricity and water. Despite rain in the region, many people are sleeping outside, afraid of further aftershocks. Fuel, water and food are scarce.
Working Together to Respond
The Action by Churches Together Alliance is working with the Chilean government to assess the situation and determine the best response. Presbyterian World Service & Development is a member of the ACT Alliance and is accepting donations for this disaster. We will continue to post updates as they become available.
You can help those most affected by the earthquake in Chile through your prayerful and financial support. You can make a donation to PWS&D by calling 1-800-619-7301 ext. 291, donating online, through your church or mailing a cheque to the office. Please mark all donations “Chile Relief.”
