Overwhelming Response for Haiti

Individuals and congregations across the country have made a remarkable response to victims of the earthquake in Haiti through PWS&D. To date, we have already raised over $1.3 million!

Working together with the Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance, we are reaching those in need with food, clean water, hygiene kits, tents, trauma counseling and latrines. We have assisted more than 150,000 people since the earthquake hit, and the majority of this assistance is ongoing.

Critical needs remain

Shelter and sanitation are among the most critical needs, especially as Haiti’s rainy season approaches. The majority of displaced people do not have adequate shelter to withstand heavy rains. The rainy season also carries the danger of an outbreak of malaria, dengue fever and waterborne diseases. Tented camps have already been set up for those who lost their homes, and 300 latrines have been installed with an additional 800 latrines planned for construction.

Local food sellers have been contracted to provide daily hot meals for nearly 1,000 people, with a goal of reaching 4,000 people daily. Using local food sellers instead of dry rations supports the local economy and promotes the recovery of livelihoods in the aftermath of the earthquake. Farmers also urgently need seeds, tools and fertilizers to start planting crops in order to maintain local food production over the coming months.
