Conflict and poverty are a daily reality for many people in developing nations. And sadly, it is the innocent victims of war who suffer the most. PWS&D is working to help create new futures for people in places like Afghanistan, where an innovative new program is helping young girls by providing opportunities for education. Mastura* is 10 years old and she has never been to school. She is typical of many young people in the country whose lives have been disrupted by conflict. When violence broke out, her family escaped to neighbouring Pakistan. After years in a refugee camp, they returned home only to discover that everything they once had was lost. Without any source of income, life is a daily struggle.
In a country where the female literacy rate is under 18%, the chance for girls like Mastura to receive an education, get a job and overcome poverty feels impossible. Without assistance these girls could find themselves trapped in a crippling cycle of poverty that will continue for yet another generation. Yet Mastura has hope. Through the generous support of caring Presbyterians across Canada, PWS&D and our partners have undertaken an innovative and holistic new program to bring education and health care to girls in Afghanistan. The program focuses on girls between the ages of 5-12, currently not enrolled in school. With cooperation from their families and community, the program brings girls back into the classroom for the chance to have a brighter future.
You can make a difference
A gift of $106 will send a girl like Mastura to school for one year. It is easy to feel helpless in the face of so much need, but today there is an opportunity to respond. We cannot allow injustice and war to prevail. By supporting life-changing programs around the world, we can make a difference in many lives. Investing now will help change the future for those less fortunate. What gift is more meaningful than helping to provide education for a better future, food for the hungry, clean water and access to health care? Mastura wants to grow up and be a doctor. Together, let us help her fulfil this dream. Let us work to fulfil the dreams of so many children and families around the world.
