Myanmar (Burma): Aid yields results; 171,000 people see emergency relief

Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) continues to aid victims of Cyclone Nargis which devastated Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta on 2 May 2008. Although more than 1.3 million people have received assistance many survivors in the hardest hit areas are still waiting for relief.
An effective response
PWS&D continues to support Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance to provide emergency food, water and sanitation, temporary shelter and essential non-food items.

- More than 171,000 people have received emergency relief, including food, tarpaulins and non-food items
- More than 2,800 water baskets, each providing 250 people with clean water, have been distributed to communities in need
- For those who have lost their homes, 21 relief centres have been established and 60,000 people have already been assisted . A one-month supply of food has reached 35,000 people and 25,000 people will receive food lasting six months. In hard-to-reach areas of the Irrawaddy Delta, approximately 67,000 people have received food, non-food items and temporary shelter
- 600 staff and volunteers will receive health training in June
