Winnipeg Inner City Missions
Winnipeg Inner City Missions (WICM) has been an integral part of our city neighbourhoods for 40 years. It is committed to serving Aboriginal individuals and families and others living in the inner city of Winnipeg.
WICM’s mandate is to help provide a safe, nurturing and peaceful atmosphere in which people can begin to achieve their potential and find their way to having adequate food, clothing and a safe place to live being listened to and understood, achieving employment developing physical, emotional, spiritual and social well-being.
WICM operates three locations as described below:
Flora House (located at 739 Flora Avenue)
Flora House was opened in 1962 and is found in the north end of Winnipeg. It offers programs primarily for children and teens, but does have some family programs. Services offered at this location include:
- Learning and play program: Children ages 1‐5 and their care giver 10 a.m. Monday
- After-school program: Children ages 6‐10 Monday to Friday 3:30 to 6 p.m.
- Youth Computer Program: youth ages 11‐14 Monday to Friday 6:30‐8:30 p.m.
- Adult Cooking Club
- Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank: Every Tuesday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
- Cocaine Anonymous Meetings: Saturday and Sunday evening 7 p.m.
Anishinabe Fellowship Centre (located at 287 Laura Street)
Anishinabe was opened in 1968 and is found in the north end of Winnipeg. It was originally known as the Inner City Indian Project. Services offered at this location include:
- A.A. Meetings: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 7‐9 p.m.
- Clothing Bank: Operates Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Anishinabe Place of Hope/Endaayaang [Our Place] (located at 415 Logan Avenue)
The Place of Hope opened its doors on September 12, 2007. This project provides housing for displaced native people who commit themselves to gaining the self esteem and skills necessary to find a place in today’s society. Services offered at this location include:
- 20 self-contained modified one-bedroom apartments: For First Steps to Employment project participants only. No smoking, no drugs, no alcohol
- Full-time parish nurse and parish social worker: Provision of free counselling,
advocacy, referral, and support services to the community. - Adult drop-in centre: Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free phone, free access to computers, free internet access, free coffee, free T.V., safe place to gather.
- Emergency food services: Emergency food package once per month.
- Church service: Every Sunday 3:30‐5p.m. Church service and Sunday School for all ages
