Mistawasis Memorial Church
Opened in the 1890’s, Mistawasis Memorial Church is located in central Saskatchewan, west of Prince Albert. It is located on a reserve that is named after Chief Mistawasis who first extended the invitation to the Presbyterian Church to establish worship on the reserve. Currently programs include regular worship and vacation Bible school in the summer.
As part of the congregation’s outreach to the reserve community and beyond, a healing circle is being planned to serve and support teenagers and young adult women who are single mothers. A large and growing demographic group in native communities, these young women face the challenge of raising their children, developing the necessary parenting skills to enhance their youngsters’ development, while finding ways of furthering their own education, personal development and vocation. The circle will be offered as a place of healing and support as they face these life challenges.
An increasing number of people from the Mistawasis community are living off-reserve in order to pursue post-secondary education, find employment, or simply because of the chronic housing shortage. Prince Albert, the nearest large community where many relocate, is lacking an urban native ministry to support those living in that city.
In conjunction with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Prince Albert, Mistawasis Memorial Church is starting to plan for the establishment of an urban ministry to native people in Prince Albert after the pattern of many of our church’s native ministries in other cities, in order to provide counselling support, healing circles, a place of worship and a point of connection for members of the Mistawasis community as well as others in need.
