Review

Leddy invites readers to ponder gratitude as the most radical attitude to life. Such a spirit of gratitude is the beginning point of authentic spirituality, genuine politics and good economics. It begins with the awareness that our very existence is a gift.

Such an attitude of gratitude is "the foundation of faith in God as the Creator of all beginnings, great and small. It awakens the imagination to another way of being, to another kind of economy, the great economy of grace in which each person is of infinite value and worth."

So often, however, our deepest spiritual desires — the search for identity, the quest for meaning, and the longing for happiness — are converted into cravings for more — for things, for a certain lifestyle, popularity and success. These insatiable cravings may take more subtle forms — more experiences, more relationships, more information, more self-knowledge, even more spirituality. In our driven-ness we remain dissatisfied and become destructive of our energies, our time and the greatest gift of all — our life. This also has negative implications for the world in which we live.

For Leddy, the discovery of this liberating attitude of gratitude is an ordinary mysticism that will always have concrete implications for the world without becoming vague and abstract.
