For too long we in the western world have been living a kind of abundant life that is resulting in destruction to our planet and injustice to others. It is time, if we are going to save ourselves and this world, that we begin to imagine and live a different abundant life, one that makes the earth healthier and people happier. This, argues McFague, is "the great work of the twenty-first century." The survival of humankind and our planet are at stake.
McFague lays out two economic models the neo-classical contemporary model and an ecological alternative. Each model leads to a different theology, and to a different understanding of our place on the planet, resulting in different behaviours and different views of the abundant life.
McFague writes, "We misinterpret God’s love when we think it is merely for our comfort or even our spiritual growth. If the saints give us a lesson, it is that God’s presence in our lives should turn us into workers for an alternative world." This alternative world must embrace a Christian way of living that supports a just and sustainable planet.
This is an excellent book on a very timely subject.
