Review
In this book the founder of Bread for the World focuses on how living in an affluent culture turns our hearts toward fleeting satisfactions and away from the true Source of joy. How is it that in the face of unprecedented affluence, so many feel discontented? Ultimately, while possessions may capture the heart, they cannot nourish the soul. The desire for ‘more’ becomes addictive and leads to rising expectations and frantic lives, and even violence, injustice and exploitation.
And yet it is not enough to simply live with less. This on its own does not liberate. The answer is to say ‘Yes’ to God to God’s life-giving gifts, to a life of compassion, to a life of justice and love, to a life of prayer and celebration.
While this may be a painful book to read, it is also a liberating book. It is not a book about ‘oughts’ but a book about joy and fulfillment. A profound and compelling book.
