Review

Fans of best selling author, Philip Yancey, will not be disappointed with Soul Survivor, delivered in his usual, "not as pastor but as fellow pilgrim"style. Yancey opens his life and takes us through his rejection of the Christianity from his upbringing in a legalistic church heavily indoctrinated in racism and hypocrisy. He fits together his religious past and his spiritual present by sharing the influence of thirteen mentors that he has known personally or has come to know through their work. This bakers dozen of inspirational people are not all Christian such as Gandhi; some are well known such as Martin Luther King and Henri Nouwen; some are little known; all are flawed or have had major struggles. While revealing what he has learned from their troubled lives, Yancey challenges us to never become stagnate in our own faith, brings us new perspectives and expands our horizons. Each of these chapters on each mentor whets our appetite to learn more about the lives and minds that influenced Yancey, making the further reading suggestions by the author much appreciated.
