Presbyteries
In the presbyterian system of church government, each local congregation elects a group of elders who meet in what is called a session. The session has the over-all responsibility for the direction, Christian education, and pastoral care of the congregation.
The court (or body) to which the session is responsible is called a presbytery. This is usually a geographical area composed of a number of Presbyterian congregations. Presently there are 46 presbyteries from Newfoundland to British Columbia.
The minister of each congregation plus one ruling elder, chosen by the session and called the representative elder, attend meetings of presbytery. Presbytery meets anywhere from a few times a year to monthly.
The presbytery makes important decisions affecting congregations, such as who will be ordained, matters of discipline regarding ministers, decisions about church property, and they also approve calls of ministers to congregations.
